DARK & DREADFUL
claustrophobic tension
Films that generate sustained psychological pressure through spatial or situational confinement — a single room, apartment, building, or surveilled environment becomes a trap that tightens across the runtime, producing dread, paranoia, and a felt sense of constriction in the viewer as walls close in around characters who cannot escape their circumstances, their spaces, or their own unraveling minds. Distinct from emotionally-restrained (which withholds feeling as a formal strategy, with drama living in silence and ellipsis) by requiring that confinement itself be the active mechanism of pressure rather than suppression of emotion; distinct from one-night-odyssey (which shares temporal compression but sends characters outward through space) by being specifically about spatial and psychological enclosure — the world shrinks rather than opens.
