SLOW & QUIET
documentary style
A formal mode in which the camera adopts a patient, non-interventionist relationship to human life — observing characters in real or real-feeling environments with non-professional or naturalistic performances, available or ambient light, and an absence of dramatic scoring or editorial manipulation, such that the texture of daily existence (labor, waiting, small transactions, the weight of poverty or routine) is allowed to accumulate meaning without being shaped into spectacle. Distinguished from procedural-detail (which uses granular process and technical authenticity to generate tension or immersion within genre frameworks) by being specifically about ethical and aesthetic restraint in the face of ordinary life rather than the mechanics of a task or mission; distinguished from hyper-edited (which asserts the filmmaker's presence through aggressive montage) by requiring that the editing remain subordinate to duration and observation, never calling attention to itself.
