“Someone you pass on the street may already be the love of your life.”

Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) runs a small independent bookstore in New York until a massive chain store opens nearby. Online, she falls into an anonymous romance with a stranger who makes her laugh at night, though by day she's trading barbs with Joe Fox (Tom Hanks), the charming son of the chain store's owner. Nora Ephron builds the story on the pleasure of two people discovering each other in the dark while the world pushes them toward collision.
