He marries Vivian (Ginnifer Goodwin) and climbs toward stardom, but pills and whiskey hollow him out while June Carter (Reese Witherspoon) watches from the wings. Mangold traces the man between his hunger for redemption and the darkness that keeps dragging him under, shooting the early scenes in warm gold light.
