David Aames (Tom Cruise), a wealthy Manhattan magazine publisher, crashes his car and wakes to find his face scarred beyond recognition. He moves through his penthouse in a fog of painkillers, seeing Sofia Serrano (Penélope Cruz) everywhere, unsure if she is real or a phantom. As the line between his memories and his present life dissolves, everyone around him seems complicit in a conspiracy he cannot control or escape.
