Max (Patton Oswalt) and his friends live in a New York apartment building where their days fill with minor schemes and larger loyalties. When Max's owner has a baby, the dog spirals into anxiety, while Gidget (Jenny Slate) sneaks into a cat lady's apartment to retrieve a toy. The film pulls these separate threads together as the pets discover that what matters most is the pack they've chosen and the humans who need them.
