Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a South Carolina farmer, has stayed out of the Revolution until Col. William Tavington (Jason Isaacs), a British officer, burns his plantation and kills his youngest son. Martin takes up arms alongside his eldest, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), leading a militia through the Carolina backcountry, learning that the cost of fighting for freedom means losing everything he fought to protect.
