A family of five is on holiday in a Thai resort when the Indian Ocean tsunami arrives without warning. Maria Bennett (Naomi Watts) is struck by the water and separated from her husband Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their sons, including Lucas (Tom Holland). J. A. Bayona traces their desperate search for one another in hospitals and refugee camps, following what fractures in a family and what holds it together when survival itself feels uncertain.
