Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) works as a guard on death row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary during the Great Depression, overseeing men in their final days. Then John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) arrives in the cell block, a massive man convicted of a terrible crime, and inexplicable healings begin to occur around him. Darabont shoots the prison in sepias and shadows, letting the camera linger on the faces of men watching the impossible unfold.
