Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) is a single mother whose twelve-year-old daughter Regan (Linda Blair) begins to change in ways that no doctor can explain: violent tantrums, obscene speech, a voice that isn't hers. Two priests arrive to confront what may be possession itself. Father Merrin (Max von Sydow) and Father Karras (Jason Miller) discover that some evils cannot be reasoned with or cast out, only endured.
