“I want us to be brothers again, like we used to be.”

Three brothers board a train crossing India, each carrying a grief they cannot name. Francis (Owen Wilson) has organized the trip as a kind of spiritual rescue mission, though Peter (Adrien Brody) and Jack (Jason Schwartzman) are skeptical of the plan. What binds them is not a shared destination but the compartment they occupy together, moving through the landscape while the distance between them stays the same.
