During the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush, a domesticated dog named Buck is stolen from his California home and shipped to the harsh Yukon. John Thornton (Harrison Ford), a weathered prospector, finds Buck half-starved and sees a kindred spirit worth saving. As man and dog venture into the frozen wilderness together, Buck sheds the constraints of civilization and discovers that freedom is what transforms a creature into itself.
