As the war tightens around them, she steals books and reads them aloud to Max (Ben Schnetzer), a Jewish refugee hidden in their basement. Brian Percival frames these moments of stolen words and hidden kindness against the machinery of war, letting small acts of defiance carry the weight of the whole dark world.
