Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio), a young American backpacker in Bangkok, receives a cryptic map to a hidden island and sets out to find it. He arrives at a secret beach colony where Sal (Tilda Swinton) has built an isolated utopia with French travelers Françoise (Virginie Ledoyen) and Étienne (Guillaume Canet). Richard is seduced by paradise, but his arrival begins to fracture the community's fragile order from within.
