In 2018, the machines have already won. John Connor (Christian Bale) leads the human resistance from an underground bunker, hunting for the boy who will become Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) before Skynet can reach him. A mysterious man named Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) emerges from the ruins, and as the machines close in, Connor must decide whether to trust him.
