Twenty years after leaving Edinburgh, Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) returns to find his old friends trapped in the same neighborhoods and habits. Simon (Jonny Lee Miller) runs a brothel; Spud (Ewen Bremner) writes in a council flat; Begbie (Robert Carlyle) has just finished prison. Boyle shoots the city in neon and gray, and what emerges is the particular pain of wanting to escape people you love.
