In the Hollywood of the late 1940s, a struggling screenwriter named Joe Gillis (William Holden) takes shelter in the mansion of Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), a silent-film star whose career ended decades ago. She hires him to polish a comeback script she has written, drawing him deeper into her world of faded grandeur and delusion. By the end, Joe cannot leave, or will not, and Norma's grip on him becomes the thing that destroys him.
