Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), a shy teenager in Queens, is bitten by a genetically engineered spider and wakes with superhuman strength and the ability to stick to walls. When his uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson) is killed, Peter realizes his powers carry an obligation he cannot ignore. He swings between the city's towers at night, a figure in red and blue against the black Manhattan skyline, hunting the man responsible.
