Requiem for a Dream

Four people in Brooklyn descend into separate addictions: Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn), a widow, chases weight loss through diet pills; her son Harry (Jared Leto) and his girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) chase heroin; Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) chases the same. Aronofsky splices their spirals together in a blur of close-ups and repetition, showing how the body becomes a locked room and the mind retreats into itself.
