Portrait of a Lady on Fire
“Don't regret. Remember.”
Marianne (Noémie Merlant), a painter, arrives on a remote Breton island in 1770 to paint a wedding portrait of Héloïse (Adèle Haenel), a young aristocrat who refuses to sit for it. Héloïse will not cooperate, so Marianne studies her in stolen glances by day and paints from memory by candlelight at night. What begins as one woman watching another becomes desire that threatens the futures both women have already been promised.
