“Who's up for a close encounter?”

Two comic-book nerds, Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost), are driving across the American Southwest when they pick up Paul (Seth Rogen), a wisecracking alien who has just escaped a government facility. Federal agents led by Zoil (Jason Bateman) chase them through the desert while Ruth Buggs (Kristen Wiig) joins the chase. Mottola shoots the whole thing with a light touch, letting the absurdity breathe.
