Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) lies in an alley, beaten and half-dead, when Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård) finds her and carries him to his apartment. Over two nights, she recounts the years between her youth and this moment, a descent through desire and violence. Von Trier shoots the confession in close, airless rooms where Joe's voice and the weight of what she describes are the only movements that matter.
