“This is the story of a lifetime”

Miami in the 1980s and 90s, where a Black boy named Chiron (Ashton Sanders) grows up poor and motherless in a neighborhood ruled by drug dealers. A local kingpin named Juan (Mahershala Ali) takes him under his wing, offering shelter and a kind of rough protection. Barry Jenkins follows Chiron across three decades, watching what he risks if he lets anyone close enough to know him.
