Jo March (Saoirse Ronan) wants to be a writer and live free from the constraints that bind women of her time. Her sisters navigate their own paths through love and ambition in Civil War-era Massachusetts, with their mother Marmee (Laura Dern) holding the family together. Gerwig moves between past and present, showing how the choices these women make ripple outward, threatening the bonds that have sustained them.
