A cargo ship arrives in Los Angeles carrying Chinese refugees worth a fortune to traffickers, and Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Murtaugh (Danny Glover) catch the case. Donner pairs his worn detectives with a young cop (Chris Rock) hungry to prove himself and watches them chase a trail to a mysterious crime boss. By the end, they understand that some partners stick with you not because the work gets easier, but because the alternative is doing it alone.
