A great white shark begins killing swimmers off a New England beach town, and police chief Brody (Roy Scheider) wants the beaches closed. The mayor refuses, so Brody sets out on a boat with a marine biologist, Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), and a grizzled shark hunter, Quint (Robert Shaw). Spielberg cranks the pressure tighter with each outing into open water, where the three men realize the shark is far larger and hungrier than anyone predicted.
