Marcus (Vincent Cassel) and Pierre (Albert Dupontel) search Paris at night for the man who brutalized Alex (Monica Bellucci), determined to find him and exact revenge. Gaspar Noé builds the film backward, each scene preceding the last, so the audience watches revenge unfold in reverse. By the time we reach the beginning, we understand that time moves only forward, and nothing that happens next can undo what has already been done.
