Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) wakes in a garage after a terrorist attack leaves him shaken and his armor in pieces. A mysterious figure called the Mandarin claims credit for the bombing, and Stark pursues him alone, estranged from Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Colonel Rhodes (Don Cheadle). Shane Black stages the action as a series of quick-cut escapes and improvised fights, each one stripped down and propulsive, the camera always moving.
