A detective from Los Angeles, Will Dormer (Al Pacino), arrives in an Alaskan town where the sun never sets to investigate a murder. During a stakeout in the fog, he fires a shot that kills his own partner, then watches a local man, Walter Finch (Robin Williams), discover what happened. Dormer's exhaustion and moral collapse become Finch's leverage, and the two begin a twisted negotiation where each man holds the other's secret.
