Rome in the second century sprawls across marble and sand, where emperors commission spectacles of blood to distract the masses. Lucius (Paul Mescal), a man with a hidden lineage, is forced into the arena as a slave fighter where he catches the eye of the ambitious merchant Macrinus (Denzel Washington). Ridley Scott stages the combat with operatic scale, but survival in the arena demands a cost that survival alone cannot pay.
