Susanna (Winona Ryder) wakes up in a psychiatric hospital after a suicide attempt, unsure how long she'll stay or what the doctors think is wrong with her. Inside, she meets Lisa (Angelina Jolie), a charismatic patient with a gift for trouble, and the others in their ward. The eighteen months that follow test whether the bonds they form can survive the weight of what each of them stands to lose.
