Lieutenant John Dunbar (Kevin Costner), a Union officer sent to a remote frontier post, finds himself drawn into the world of a Lakota tribe. As he learns their language and ways from Kicking Bird (Graham Greene), his loyalties shift from the army to the people who have adopted him. Costner builds toward a collision between two forces, each certain it owns the land and the man caught between them.
