Yu Shu Lien pursues the thief through the tea houses and rooftops of Qing Dynasty China, tracing the theft to a young woman (Zhang Ziyi) whose hunger for martial glory outpaces her understanding of its cost. Ang Lee choreographs the fight sequences as if gravity were negotiable, each movement suspended.
