Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska), an aspiring author, marries Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) and follows him to a decaying Gothic mansion in Cumberland. His sister Lucille (Jessica Chastain) moves through the halls with the ease of someone who knows every secret the house holds. Edith begins to see figures in the shadows, each appearance pulling her deeper into the mystery of what the Sharpes have done.
