In the Scottish Highlands, Merida (Kelly Macdonald) is a princess expected to marry one of three suitors chosen by her mother, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Desperate to escape the arrangement, Merida seeks out a witch in the forest and asks for a spell to change her fate. Chapman and Andrews build this world in rich detail, the castle stone and tartan patterns as expressive as the characters' faces, and the magic carries real consequences.
