Mason Evans Jr. (Ellar Coltrane) is six years old when his mother (Patricia Arquette) and father (Ethan Hawke) separate, and the film follows him through Texas childhood into his late teens. Richard Linklater shot the same actors over twelve years, watching Mason's voice deepen and his face change. The accumulation of small moments, a new school, a stepfather's house rules, a first drink, a college acceptance.
