An 11-year-old boy in a Durham mining town discovers ballet and becomes obsessed with it, even as his father Jackie (Gary Lewis) insists it's not for boys like them. His teacher Mrs Wilkinson (Julie Walters) sees real talent in him worth protecting, but the 1984 miners' strike has turned the town into a battleground of anger and need. Billy keeps dancing in secret, knowing that if his family finds out, everything he wants could disappear.
