Manny Torres (Diego Calva), a Mexican immigrant, arrives in 1920s Hollywood desperate to make it in the picture business. He befriends Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie), an ambitious young actress, and Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt), a fading silent-film star, as the industry tilts beneath them all toward sound. Chazelle shoots the parties and sets with a camera that never stops moving, letting the excess and ambition and ruin unfold.
