“Why are they here?”

When massive alien ships hover over twelve sites across Earth, linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is called in to decode their language before military powers start a war. She works with physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) inside the Montana vessel, learning that the aliens' written symbols reshape how the mind itself thinks. The cost of understanding them is a future she cannot unsee.
