A canyoneer named Aron Ralston (James Franco) sets out alone through a remote slot canyon in Utah and gets trapped when a boulder pins his arm. For five days he is wedged in the stone with no water, no way to signal for help, and only the narrow strip of sky above. Boyle makes the canyon itself a living thing, and what matters most is not whether Aron escapes but what he learns about himself in the dark.
